Life saving equipment
The National Fire Protection Association and the Wisconsin UDC now states that all residential buildings have smoke alarms installed in the following areas:
- Inside each bedroom/ sleeping area
- Outside of and close to each sleeping area (The City of Madison requires one less than six feet outside of bedroom doors)
- On each floor of the building.
Wisconsin Law requires that a CO alarm must be installed in the following areas:
-In the basement and of each floor level.
Smoke and CO alarms need not be installed in attics, garages, or storage areas. Alarms used in Wisconsin must be approved by Underwriters Laboratories.

A representative number of the installed alarms are tested by pushing the "test button.
